Renewable resource said to be ‘softer than cotton’

Taken a cruise lately? You might recognize the name on a new bamboo apparel store that just opened in San Diego.
Cariloha is a 5-year-old company that sells very soft clothing, sheets and other products made from trendy renewable bamboo. With 16 stores worldwide, including boutiques in Jamaica, Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, it’s one of the fastest‐growing merchants promoted on board cruise lines such as Carnival, Celebrity and Disney.
Its local store is at 435 J Street in the Gaslamp District.
Bamboo apparel is “softer than cotton,” keeps the wearer 3 degrees cooler than cotton and has antibacterial properties, according to the store. It’s also a fast-growing natural resource. “You don’t normally come across an entire store where everything is made of bamboo,” said Rodrigo Lagunas, Manager of Cariloha’s San Diego store.
The store features educational displays about bamboo and carries apparel, accessories, home décor, bed and bath sets and more. The store interior – including the ceiling and floors – is also made from bamboo.
The best seller? The 500-thread-count sheets, currently on sale through the end of the month in the store (not online) for $99 to $159 per set. “It’s equivalent to 1,000-thread Egyptian cotton,” said Lagunas. “It’s very, very breathable. We do have a larger selection and our thread count is higher than others I’ve seen.”
