A bed is one of the most used pieces of furniture in an entire home. The quality of sleep that a bed provides can directly impact how someone feels the next day. The hours of use that a bed receives every day can quickly make the mattress feel rough and uncomfortable. Removing a worn mattress and then purchasing a new one is not always a practical solution. Fortunately, there are a few tips that can help to make a bed more comfortable.
Good Bedding
One of the easiest ways to make a mattress feel softer and more relaxing is to use good bedding. Sheets should feel comfortable when they are purchased. Pillows should provide the correct amount of resistance so that they are not too soft or too hard. The normal temperature of the room needs to be considered as well. A bed in a normally cool room should be dressed with a comforter. A bed in a warm environment should have light sheets that are made from a breathable material. Many people find thread counts important when choosing sheets and other bedding. Higher thread counts make fabrics feel softer and smoother.
Mattress Padding
There are a variety of different types of padding that can be placed directly on top of a mattress under the fitted sheet. These can be made from cotton pads, inflated air pockets or responsive foams.
Mattress padding will make the bed feel more comfortable and will add some support to the body. The padding will conform to the natural contours in the back or side. Water-resistant padding even exists for beds that are used by children or that experience spills.
Keep the Mattress Clean
Dirt and dust can collected in a mattress over the course of many years. This makes the materials less flexible and heavier. The result is that a mattress could become very rough and uncomfortable. A simple cleaning with a vacuum every week can help to minimize this accumulation. It can also be beneficial to use a home steamer in order to clean the fibers of the mattress material. The sheets,
duvet, pillows and comforter should also be cleaned regularly. A freshly cleaned bed is far more comfortable than one that has not been maintained.
Rotate the Mattress
People tend to sleep in one or two positions consistently. This means that shoulders, knees and elbows will find the same position on the mattress every night. This can actually cause a compression of the padding inside of the mattress over the course of several months or years. Severely compressed mattresses become uncomfortable for the person who has been sleeping on it. One way to combat this problem is to occasionally rotate a mattress. Rotating a mattress involves spinning it around so the bottom becomes the top. Additionally, the mattress can be flipped completely over so the underside becomes the top. Rotating the mattress regularly will keep a bed comfortable for a longer period of time.
Maintain the Box-Spring
A box-spring provides a firm surface for the mattress to rest on that still has some flexibility. A mattress will remain much more comfortable for a longer period of time if it is kept on top of a box-spring. Box springs should be cleaned just like the mattress and should also be rotated to prevent individual springs from breaking. Elevated box-springs can increase the comfort and longevity of a mattress by reducing wear on the edges that can be caused by low beds that are difficult to get out of.
