Construction and Materials
The Cariloha Bamboo mattress is a 10″ mattress made up of three layers of memory foam.
The cover of the the Cariloha mattress is soft and comfortable, made of plush viscose from bamboo.
Firmness & Support
The Cariloha Mattress is a universal comfort mattress, and only comes in one firmness option, which we feel is a 6-7 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress compresses down a bit more for me, as I’m significantly heavier than Kaye, and I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers in most mattresses.
The Cariloha Mattress felt great to Kaye and was the perfect firmness, as she likes mattresses on the firmer end of the spectrum usually and also weighs half what I do!
In terms of support, the Cariloha Mattress does a good job of providing support in all sleeping positions.
As we’re primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips without making them feel stiff or painful during sleep.
The Cariloha Mattress does a great job at supporting our side sleeping preference, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs during the night.
Comfort
The Cariloha initially feels firmer to me, due to my heavier weight (230lbs). I did notice I compressed through the comfort layers and generally felt the firmer underlying support foam more.
However, the 10″ thick mattress did not cause me to “bottom out” and feel the underlying mattress foundation, which tends to happen with thinner 10″ mattresses.
The Bamboo Comfort charcoal memory foam helps your body adapt to the mattress and relieves pressure points.
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress is an all-foam mattress, so it gives the hug and body contour that memory foam is known for, without feeling “trapped in foam” that some all foam mattress tend to do.
The foam comfort layer combined with the transition layer both work well together to provide the classic memory foam feeling while at the same time providing a small degree of responsiveness, albeit a lot less than a latex hybrid mattress or hybrid coil mattress.
The underlying support layer does a good job at supporting our bodies and providing that deep compression support as well.
The soft exterior bamboo cover gives the Cariloha a very comfortable exterior surface, which makes it nice and comfortable to sleep on as well.
Sleeping Hot
The Cariloha mattress does a decent job at providing cool sleep, but due to the all foam construction and no cooling technology in the layers there was some heat retention felt at times.
We felt a small amount of heat when sleeping together on the mattress, which is common for all foam-constructed mattresses in our experience and something we are used to with these type of mattresses.
There wasn’t enough heat produced to wake up feeling sweaty or sticky, but due to the fact that we sleep as a couple and live in Texas, heat retention is a big issue and something that we like to see all foam mattresses making an attempt to prevent.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress does a pretty good job with sinkage and motion transfer, about in line with most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent, and as I weigh around 230 lbs I tend to compress and sink lower in most mattresses.
Kaye, who weighs half as much as I do, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight. With the Cariloha Bamboo mattress only being 10″, with my heavier weight I did feel some sinkage compared to thicker foam mattresses.
The all-foam construction does a good job at preventing motion transfer, although the responsiveness of the mattress is a bit lower as well.
With the Cariloha, we noticed that any movement by me during the night wasn’t felt by Kaye much at all.
Edge support is pretty good with the Cariloha Bamboo Mattress, a bit better than most memory foam mattresses we have reviewed due to the inclusion of their edge support foam layers.
I slept near the edge at times to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them compressed under my weight.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Cariloha had an average amount of off-gassing when taken out of the box and packaging, which can be expected from an all foam mattress. The odor dissipated within a night and was nothing out of the ordinary compared to many similarly constructed mattresses, and was about average.
Customer Service
Cariloha provides the standard customer service offerings you can expect in a “Bed In A Box” online mattress retailer. This includes:
Cariloha Mattress Price
The Cariloha Mattress is priced at $1,100 for a Queen, which is a decent price given the quality materials and construction used in this mattress.
Summary
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress is a great all foam mattress that is affordable and comfortable and features bamboo material in its construction, similar to its bedding and bath products.
The combination of foam layers used in the design of the Cariloha Mattress work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive mattress that is ideal for all sleeping positions.
The Cariloha is handles heavier sleepers and couples about average, due to its 10″ all foam design that causes some sinkage for heavier sleepers, but does offer good edge control due to the added edge support system.
The Cariloha Bamboo Mattress provides the classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without feeling trapped in the foam like other all foam mattresses, albeit with a bit of trade-off of less responsiveness from the all foam construction.
All in all, the Cariloha Bamboo Mattress is a very solid memory foam mattress that we recommend for both individuals as well as couples who like the feel of memory foam and like the feel of Cariloha’s sheets as well. They gave it a 9 out of 10.
